Beer: Sierra Nevada Brewing Summerfest
Location: Chico, CA
Appearance: Clear, bubbles running directly through the middle of the beer, color of 11 am sunshine. A nice pale yellow/straw color.
Aroma: Yeast, bread, sour
Body & Texture: Crisp, smooth, super easy to drink, light bodied.
Aftertaste: Rich lager taste. The bread character you expect with a lager. The flavor lingers for quite a while.
It’s pretty obvious that I’m not a lager fan. Heck, if you look through my archive on here you’ll notice that I tend to pick IPA’s to review. That’s because that’s my favorite type of beer. For David’s graduation one of his friends, Kyle gave him a case of different beers. Kyle works for a local distributing company so he always has plenty of selection. One of the beers he gave David was this Summerfest lager by Sierra Nevada.
While I’m not usually a lager fan there is a time and a place for them. One instance would be on a hot summery day. That’s when this Sierra Nevada Summerfest comes in handy. The 5% alcohol is perfect for day drinking. The color reminded me of sunshine. The taste is crisp, just like the can read, and the beer itself feels very light in the mouth. The only other lager I’d say I actually enjoy is Anchor Brewing’s California Lager.
I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. It’s definitely not one I would have normally picked up in the store, though I’ve seen it on the shelves for years. I’m glad I gave it a try because I would say that I would actually buy this beer on my own. It’d be perfect to bring to the pool, beach, or a backyard summer BBQ. In fact, I have no doubt in my mind I’ll be purchasing a six pack this summer.
