I have to admit that when I first tried this IPA a few months back I was not impressed. I’m not sure if I wasn’t in the right mood but I took pictures and was going to do a brew review and then decided against it. Then, on Tuesday after work my dad stopped by to take a look at an annoying beeping on the side of my house and also dropped me off another can of Wolf Among the Weeds. I was pleasantly surprised and after a weekend of drinking my favorites and no-new-to-me beers, I was happy to give it a second try and attempt a brew review.
Second time around, I am a much happier drinker. The color looks really nice for an IPA, the head retention lasted almost the entire time I drank my glass. One of my favorite traits about this beer was the aroma. Let’s just say it was off the hook. So many different smells going on in there! I like this beer. I would drink it again. Would I buy it myself? No, probably not. Mostly because of the 8% alcohol. That’s higher than what I like to normally stick to for my “everyday beer’. I’m also confused by it being categorized as an IPA. At 80 IBU’s it seems like it should be categorized under Double IPA which it is on Untappd.
While overall I enjoyed Wolf Among the Weeds, I don’t think I’d recommend it to many newer beer drinkers. If you already know you enjoy high alcohol beers or Double IPA’s then I’d say you’d probably enjoy this one. It’s definitely got the whole West Coast IPA thing down.
