Grapefruit Margaritas with Jalapeño Simple Syrup

by Kelli H. on February 26, 2014

Last Saturday morning on instagram I saw it was National Margarita Day. I had no idea such a day existed but then again I wasn’t surprised. Doesn’t it seem there is a special food/drink day for everything? I’m not complaining! I just used it as an excuse to drink a margarita.

When I was at the store buying the ingredients I let the checker and bagger know it was National Margarita Day. They asked if I made it up… haha.

When I got home I got started on making the jalapeño simple syrup. I’ve seen lots of recipes for jalapeño type of margaritas and I wasn’t totally sure how I was going to incorporate the jalapeño into the margarita. At first I thought I would infuse the tequila with the jalapeño but that requires quite a bit of time which I didn’t have.  So, the next best idea seemed like I should make jalapeño simple syrup. If you want the flavor of the jalapeño to shine through more then I suggest adding some fresh slices to the margaritas as this method gave off a minimal jalapeño flavor. I tasted the simple syrup by itself and I could definitely taste the jalapeño flavor. It was actually quite delicious! It’s sweet with just a tad of heat in the finish. Once poured over the grapefruit juice, it lost some of its flavor.

I absolutely love grapefruit.  Fresh grapefruit juice works best for this recipe but you could totally use already squeezed grapefruit juice. I bought a bag of grapefruits for $1.99 and I got so much juice of out them!

Just look at all the grapefruit juice in that large mason jar! I also had quite a bit of the jalapeño simple syrup left, but just think of all the awesome things you could do with it. Sparkling jalapeño lemonade or limeade? Yum!

Of course I love the putting the squeezed lime directly into my drink as well as a slice of grapefruit. These little touches make the drink to me. The next day when I made another one I watered it down a bit by adding some sparkling water. It was delicious! Then again, I love carbonation. I loved the sparkling water addition and recommend trying to make the drink fizzy for yourself.

Mmmmm, yes, please! I was kidnapped on Saturday before I knew it was National Margarita Day and forced to go out to the local Mexican restaurant. This looks like it would’ve tasted better!

I wouldn’t have thought I would like a jalapeno drink but the way you describe it, I think I would love this! Love your grapefruit pic too!

This sounds incredible! If there is a drink on the menu that includes jalapeno, I always order it!! Can’t wait to try this!
