I kind of feel weird posting these, because I just read about them last Friday on Annie’s Eats, and here I am on Monday morning sharing the recipe. I guess you could say that’s the ultimate compliment? I liked them so much I had to share them right away! Especially since they’d make a great festive drink for Thanksgiving.
My mom has this crazy producing lime tree in her backyard. The tree seriously gives off more limes than we know what to do with. Gotta love citrus season, right? Well, when she handed me a whole bag of limes one morning, the only thing I could think of to make with them were margaritas. What does that say about me?! Just kidding…but seriously, fresh limes make the best margaritas. None of that sweet and sour crap. What is that anyway?
I’ve been wanting to make margarita’s for a while now. My dad had given me two bottle of tequila because one of his employees gave him a whole case of tequila. Lord knows my dad doesn’t need a whole case of tequila to himself — then again, who does? — so, he did what any nice dad would do, and he shared the case with me and my brother. What a nice Dad! Can you believe I’ve never even bought a bottle of tequila? David and I stick to beer and wine only at home, but after seeing those cranberry margaritas, having fresh limes, and tequila just sitting there, I HAD to make them. Seriously, they were screaming at me to be made.
So, after I made my shopping list for the week, went shopping, and made us lunch, I decided what better way to spend my Saturday afternoon than making myself (and David) margarita’s. It definitely would have been more fun if I had friends or family to share them with. David drank almost all of his, but to be fair, he’s fighting off a cold. Don’t worry though, they didn’t really effect me. I even took Ryder on a walk around the block after I drank one. I didn’t want to be one of those people who drinks alone in the afternoon…that’s just sad.
I still have tons of limes and all the ingredients left, so looks like I’ll get to enjoy them with family on Thanksgiving. I can’t wait to make my Aunt Shellie one. She’s the tequila lover in our family. Too bad my mom won’t drink them. She had a bad experience with tequila at my high school graduation party and hasn’t touched tequila since. I’m also making them tonight for my friend Elise! I haven’t seen her since her wedding in August, and I’m so excited to catch up with her. Elise calls them “cranitas” which I think is a pretty awesome name.
Recipe from Annie’s Eats
Makes 2-4 glasses
1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 cup silver tequila
1 cup cranberry juice
1/4 cup orange liqueur
3-4 tablespoons simple syrup
lime & cranberry to garnish
1. In a pitcher; mix lime juice, tequila, cranberry juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup. Fill glasses with ice and pour margaritas, garnish with lime wedges and cranberries.
Three large juicy limes yielded 1/2 cup for me.
If you decide to use cranberry cocktail/concentrate you won’t need 3-4 tablespoons simple syrup.
Using the mason jars yielded about 2 1/2 drinks, but if you use smaller cocktail glasses you’d get 4 drinks.
