Brew Review: 21st Amendment Back in Black

by Kelli H. on November 5, 2013

Beer: 21st Amendment Back in Black
Date: 10-25-13
Type: Black IPA
Location: San Francisco, CA
Availability: Year round
Alcohol: 6.8%
IBU: 65

Appearance: Black unless held in the light and then pretty damn close to black. Light brown head.

Aroma: Roasted malts and barley, hops, and sweet.

Body & Texture: Medium bodied, very smooth. Great carbonation.

Aftertaste: Deep roasted flavors with mild hop aftertaste.

Overall Impression:
I really like this beer! It’s definitely a fall/winter beer for me. I’ll be buying this beer in the near future. It’s nice to have an IPA match the color of the sky outside. It’s much more malty and has more roasted flavors than a regular IPA. It’s an easy drinker for sure. If you’re a fan of IPA’s and you also appreciate some malt flavor in your beers, then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this black IPA. It’s not as heavy as you might think from the color, so don’t be expecting the body of a porter or stout. It’s got a nice subtle hoppiness to it, so if you’re not a huge fan of hops, I think you could still enjoy this beer. I would definitely give Back in Black a try this holiday season.

Yay, SF beer! I like 21st amendment, have you been to their brewery? It’s pretty cool. I really enjoy their watermelon beer even though I am not a big fan of fruit flavored beer

I used to really like the watermelon wheat when I first started drinking beer, but not so much anymore. I know lots of people love it though! I’ve never been to the brewery.

I’ve tried this and I wasn’t the biggest fan, but what are you going to do. I need a pumpkin beer stat. None this season so far. WHAT IS MY PROBLEM?

Yeah, you need to get on that! Pumpkin beers are going away fast!

This does look like a stout- I was thinking how much Brandon would like it until I read your description, he’s likes his beer thick and heavy. This one still sounds good though!
