Brew Review: Rogue Brutal IPA

by Kelli H. on October 30, 2013

Beer: Rogue Brutal IPA
Date: 10-13-13
Type: IPA
Location: New Port, Oregon
Alcohol: 6%
IBU: 52

Appearance: Hazy, deep orange golden color, good head retention

Aroma: Hops, citrus, yeast, and malts

Body & Texture: Rich, thick, mouth feel is very pleasant

Aftertaste: Moderately hopped with bready and sweet flavors

Overall Impression:
With a name like Brutal IPA I was expecting more of a hop punch to the mouth, but it’s very well  balanced between hops and malts, and seems actually more malty than hoppy. While it’s definitely a drinkable beer and even enjoyable, it’s just not very note worthy. If it were on tap somewhere I’d give it another shot, but I wouldn’t keep this IPA stocked in my fridge. Our friend Kyle provided us with this beer and it was nice drinking it during a recent Niners game, but overall it wasn’t really that impressive. I do have to give Rogue credit though, it had a beautiful color, good carbonation, and their bottles are always very cool. Though, it’s hard to photograph these bottles because the glass gives off so many reflections!

Have you tried any of Rogue’s beers?
