Brew Review: Sierra Nevada Flipside

by Kelli H. on September 17, 2013

Beer: Sierra Nevada Flipside
Date: 9-8-13
Location: Chico, CA
Type: Red IPA
Availability: Fall Seasonal
Alcohol: 6.2%
IBU: 60

Appearance: More brown than red, amber colored

Aroma: Malts, Pine, Hops

Body & Texture: Full bodied and nicely balanced

Aftertaste: Piney hops

Overall Impression:
Can we take a second and comment on the bottle? Seriously, Sierra Nevada has some of the coolest labels, I think. The labels artwork is so intricate. My past favorite bottle of theirs was Ruthless Rye, but this now takes the cake. I love the fall colors and everything about it. As for the beer, I’m a fan! It’s more hoppy than I was excpecting, which is kind of dumb since it is an IPA after all. It’s brewed with citra, simcoe, and centennial hops. It has a great aroma, nice color, though I would have liked it more red. This is definitely more of a fall beer which makes sense since it’s a fall seasonal, but it’s released so early! I drank this on a 90 degree day, and I would have enjoyed it much more if it were 60 degrees out. It’s very well balanced between high hops and malts in the backbone. I’d say, you better be a fan of IPA’s if you buy this beer. It’s more hops than malt, so don’t be deceived by the festive label. I would definitely buy this beer again. I just hope I can buy it more towards October.

Sometimes I don’t like drinking beer because the bottle is too pretty! I even collect a few ‘caps’ that have a nice design on them.

Woot woot, SNBC! Did you actually have it here in Chico at the brewery? I love the pic with the pup.

No, I wish! I’ve never been to the brewery, but I’d love to go some day.

I love the picture with Ryder. Their label is pretty nice but I think that picture would make a better one.

I usually go for the lighter beers but this one sounds really good! I’ll have to make a trip to the brewery some day soon.

haha, I agree. Ryder on a beer label would be amazing.

Ok, Ryder with the beer it too cute for words, seriously. He totally looks like he’s chilling with the beer as well. I love the label of this beer as well, it’s so vintage and cool, but yet a bit creepy in a way? Don’t you think? 🙂

I do agree, a bit creepy, but kind of in a Halloween way, I think.
