Brew Review: Stone R&R Coconut IPA

by Kelli H. on August 20, 2013

Beer: Stone Collaboration R&R Coconut IPA
Date: 8-17-13
Type: American IPA
Alcohol: 7.7%
Location: Escondido, CA
Price: $6.49 but I think $8.99 at Whole Foods
Availability: A special collaboration so won’t last long. Collaboration with home brewers, Rip Current Brewing, & Stone Brewing.
IBU: 90

Appearance: Hazy, dark golden, good head retention

Aroma: Very citrus and fruity hops

Body & Texture: Full bodied. A pretty big bite up front right when it sits in your mouth

Aftertaste: Extremely hoppy — that’s it

Overall Impression:
I was not very impressed with this beer. For having the word coconut in the name I was really hoping for a more coconut taste, aftertaste, aroma or something! Especially since it was brewed with 280 pounds of coconut. My mom swore she could smell the coconut but both David and I couldn’t smell it. I couldn’t even get a taste of coconut in my burp! So, that was a tad disappointing. If you’re a coconut lover like me, you might as well skip this beer because it won’t be what you think. If you’re into Stone’s Ruination than I’m sure you’ll enjoy this beer. It’s just an extremely hoppy beer. I don’t know how this isn’t categorized as a Double IPA. I didn’t even find it particularly balanced. Hop heads, you’ll like this one!

Love the first picture šŸ™‚ Also, a Coconut IPA? I’ve never heard of this before! I’m surprised the coconut flavor wasn’t prominent. I’m glad you reviewed this because if I were ever to stumble upon it, the ‘coconut’ would’ve had me sold. Now I know to skip it!

I have never seen coconut IPA and I think I need it in my life.

Welp, I can’t say I’m a coconut lover, but it’s a beautiful beer. If I liked coconut, I’d be pretty bummed though that there’s not much (any?) in there.

Such a bummer! I am also a big fan of coconut, but would thought that flavor would better match with a porter or stout.

I’ve seen coconut porters, but I’ve never tried one. I wonder if I’d taste it more in that. I was excited to taste it in an IPA, but no such luck.

As a hophead, I will have to try this, but I have to say I’m kind of sad to hear that the coconut flavor profile fell short because a coconut IPA sounds amazing – if done properly! Thanks for linking up!
