Beer: The Bruery Saison De Lente
Location: Orange County, CA
Aroma: Belgian sweet yeast
Appearance: Golden, hazy unfiltered, nice head retention
Body & Texture: Light to full bodied. Sour up front from the Brettanomyces character. Fresh grass, fruit, and herbs were what came to mind while it was sitting in my mouth.
Aftertaste: Sweet with a little hop characteristic going on.
This was a well balanced Saison and a good example of the style. It was very drinkable, but somewhat sour, which is normal for a beer fermented with Brett. I could definitely taste that typical Brett characteristic; I usually describe it as a Belgian flavor or aroma. While I’m still just learning about Saison’s and developing a palate for them, I have to say that between Tank 7 & Saison De Lente, I definitely prefer Tank 7. If you’re a Saison lover, then I’m sure you’ll like this beer, but I think I’ll continue to buy Tank 7 over Saison De Lente. As my beer warmed, I found I wanted to drink it less and less.
If you’ve had either, please let me know what you think! Since I’m just starting to develop a taste for them, I wouldn’t be surprised if my opinion of these beers were to change in the next 6 months to a year. As for now, I’m having a lot of fun trying new saisons when I get the chance.
Saison De Lente is definitely a great bottle to bring to an Easter get together since the label is so pretty, with it’s light pastel colors.
