Brew Review: Saison du BUFF

by Kelli H. on April 23, 2013

Beer: Collaboration by Dogfish Head, Victory, & Stone Saison du BUFF
Date: 4-22-13
Location: Escondido, San Diego County, CA
Type: Saison
Alcohol: 7.7%
Price: $2.79/12 oz bottle

Aroma: Earthy lemon hops

Appearance: Slightly hazy or frosted looking, yellow golden, poured a nice head

Body & Texture: A bit of a bite up front, but mostly from carbonation. Reminds me of a lemon echinacea ricola cough drop, but in a good way.

Aftertaste: Slightly sour, almost dry, a little pepper

Malt Beverage Brewed with Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme
“Goodness gracious it’s herbacesouly outrageous!” – Sam Calagione

Overall Impression:
I’m VERY very happy with this beer! I’ve been somewhat unimpressed with Dogfish in the past, because of their totally off the wall beers. The ideas are cool, but for me, I tend to not want to actually drink them. Maybe since this is a collaboration beer, I enjoyed it more — who knows! Regardless, I enjoyed this beer very much! The herbs in it are not overwhelming and it’s hard to distinguish one paticular herb which means they did a good job. This is really just a delicious saison. If you’re a saison fan, I don’t see how you couldn’t like this. If you see it around, definitely do yourself a favor and pick it up. If you’re new to saisons, I think you’d probably like it too. It’s not very belgian tasting and the sourness is very slight. Definitely a great beer!

I like all the collaborations going on these days. I’m normally not a Dogfish fan either. I respect their creativity, but I don’t think it generally tastes very good.
