Brew Review: New Belgium Rampant

by Kelli H. on March 26, 2013

Beer: New Belgium Rampant
Date: 3-21-13
Location: Fort Collins, CO
Type: Imperial IPA
Alcohol: 8.5%
IBU’s: 85

Aroma: Grapefruit, citrus, and pine

Appearance: Deep golden and hazy

Body & Texture: Smooth, low carbonation, up front bitterness

Aftertaste: Very bitter with some hints of citrus

Overall Impression:
I was very excited to try Rampant. I’d heard some hype about it, and I’m always excited to try new beers. I was ready to try a Double IPA from New Belgium. I hadn’t had anything new from them in about a year. My overall impression was some what of a disappointment. I had first tasted it on tap in the same glass that appears above, and thought it was good. Nothing too spectacular, and I wasn’t going to buy it again. One of David’s friends, Kyle, gave David this beer, since he wanted to get David’s take on it. We opened it up, and thought we’d give it another try. This DIPA isn’t too balanced in my opinion. It’s just a sledge hammer of hops in your face.  A better example of this style would be Victory’s Hop Wallop. If you’re a serious hop head, you should give Rampant a try. I’d really love to know what other people thought. I think Rampant is worth a try, but I wouldn’t buy a six pack of this beer.

I only do IPA stuff if I’m really thirsty and don’t want to accidentally drink my beer too fast. I’m sort of a hop wimp; this one sounds a little much for me!
