Brew Review: Victory Helios Ale

by Kelli H. on February 19, 2013

Beer: Victory Brewing Helios Ale
Date: 2-17-13
Type: Saison
Location: Downingtown, PA
Alcohol: 7.5%
Availability: Year-round
Price: $3.99/22 oz

Aroma: Wine, hops, citrus
Appearance: Straw colored
Body & Texture: Light bodied, clean tasting, sitting in your mouth, bubbles pop reminding me of soda
Aftertaste: Tart, a little bitter, but more from a citrus bitterness/tartness than from hops
Overall Impression:
Ever since last summer when I tried Victory’s Hop Wallop, I’ve trusted their beers. Sometimes a brewery wins you over and becomes a trusted brewery. For me, some trusted breweries include; Lagunitas, Stone,  Deschutes, and Victory.  When I was at Whole Foods last Sunday looking for a new beer to try, I spotted this one. It met the requirements I was looking for; cheap price ($3.99 for a 22 oz is cheap to me!), light, andddddd….that was about it. The label definitely stood out to me. It’s just so bright and happy. How could you not want to pick up a bottle with a smiling sun on it? Maybe it’s just the inner young girl coming out in me…
Anyway, onto the beer tasting! Overall, I like this beer! I don’t have much experience with saisons, but I’ve really been wanting to try more of them. Since I don’t really have anything to compare it to, I guess it’s not a fair brew review, but hey, I’m learning and that’s all that matters. This beer reminded me of spring. The citrus was totally evident in the aroma and the taste. I’d definitely enjoy this most on a warm spring day sitting outside. I can’t really think of much more to say than, you can’t beat the price, and this is a damn good beer. I highly recommend trying one for yourself!

This beer looks delish. Love Saison. Just had a great one at the Top Rock Brewery in Berkeley and also one from Social Kitchen in SF that was made with Semillion grapes!

I have never had a Saison before. Sounds interesting. the beer itself looks bright and fresh. Like spring? 🙂 If I spot it at my local WF, I’ll pick it up to try.

I picked this one up at Market Basket a few weeks ago – good choice!
