Wine of the Week: Murphy-Goode Chardonnay

by Kelli H. on November 16, 2012

This weeks wine of the week is especially a goody! I don’t have much experience with chardonnay’s, but then again, I don’t have much experience with wine in general. I’m still a total noob. Last Saturday our friends Jeff and Debbie had us over for dinner. It’s always a treat getting together with them. We all enjoy good food, great wine, and tasty desserts! Jeff and Debbie usually provide the wine since they are members of three wine clubs. One of which is Murphy-Goode.

Last summer my friend Ali and I visited the tasting room in Healdsburg. It wasn’t one of my favorite tastings. The guy pouring our wine was pretty uninteresting and didn’t really engage us in any way. Since that tasting I haven’t been in a big rush to try anymore Murphy-Goode. When Jeff and Debbie opened this bottle I was excited; regardless of my past experience, I love trying wines that other people enjoy.

I really really enjoyed this bottle! David liked some of the others more we tried that night, but for me, I was in love. I haven’t had a chardonnay that I’ve enjoyed this much before. It was so smooth and buttery. The color was kind of a light green and yellow. It smelled fruity and didn’t taste like oak. I’ve read that chardonnay’s have high acidity, but I felt this chard was very smooth. I’d definitely buy it and recommend it to others.

We also enjoyed a few other wines that night which included; Thumbprint Gewürztraminer (big fan!), Thumbprint Four Play (pretty bold), and Foli a Deux Zinfandel (very good!). It was a great wine night to say the least. I may have participated in it too heavily…

I recognize that thumbprint bottle!! I was going to purchase it once because I thought it was so cool, but for some reason ended up picking something else. That chardonnay sounds great too. I like a little bit of buttery, but not too oaky.

I really like Thumbprint, but it’s a little out of my budget price-wise.

I love murphy goode white wine. Tried their reds and they are not very good.
