Brew Review: Mavericks Amber Ale

Beer: Mavericks Amber Ale
Date: 9-16-12
Location: Half Moon Bay
Type: Amber Ale
Price: $4/22 oz
Alcohol: 4.8%
Availability: Limited distribution, available at Half Moon Bay Brewing Co's restaurant

Aroma: Chocolate, caramel sweetness, slight malts

Appearance: Deep mahogany red, beige creamy head, tiny bubbles rise to the top.

Body & Texture: Light-medium bodied. Good amount of carbonation.  Sweet upfront taste. Great lacing.

Aftertaste: Clean finish of bitterness with a slight maltiness.

Overall Impression:
This amber was much more bitter than I'm used to. I think the bitterness was great, but I could imagine if you're not much of a fan of hops, then you may not like this amber ale. I think this is a great amber ale for anyone who loves IPA's. I started out liking amber ales before ipa's, but I feel like this is almost a great mix between the two styles. This amber ale uses Cascade hops and it's apparent in the taste. David proclaimed this as the best amber ale he's ever had. I'm not surprised since this amber ale took home third in the World Beer Cup. I would definitely buy this beer again. I'm just a little sad it's not distributed more widely. I guess I'll just have to make another trip down to Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. soon!

  2. Um, YUM! This sounds amazing. If you like this, try the Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale - brown + hops? Best of both worlds!
