Wine of the Week: Ravenswood Merlot

by Kelli H. on August 31, 2012

This merlot is a 2004 and the label stated that if you misplaced a few bottles in your cellar, discovering them in five years would be a nice find. Although it’s been well over five years, try 8…it’s still drinkable. Our realtor gave us this bottle in a pack with a few other Ravenswood, and this is the last bottle remaining. We’ve had it for 3 years above our refrigerator, and finally decided to give it a try.

I think it has aged well, but the color was a little disarming for me. I thought it had a tint of brown to it. Sitting in the glass, the merlot appears to be almost black.

I let the wine sit in the glass for a few minutes before taking a sip. First sip was a tad too acidic for my taste,  but the longer I let it sit (about 10 minutes), it really started to get better. It was smooth going down, and didn’t leave too much of an aftertaste. It’s not completely dry, but seems to be a tad dry. I appreciated this.

The aroma at first was too acidic, but after sitting longer, I was able to start smelling some peppery and fruity notes. I’d say the fruity notes were plum and prunes. It’s very sweet smelling, so that’d be overly ripe plums.

Overall, I’d be happy with drinking this again. I don’t think I could handle more than one glass, but after it airated a bit, I kept finding myself happier and happier with the taste. I’ve read online that Ravenswood Merlot usually runs around $10 a bottle. It’s 13.5% alcohol, and I would definitely try it again, maybe next time a younger bottle. Ravenswood’s tasting room is located in Sonoma County.

What’s your favorite affordable merlot?

I always find that I like red wine better if I allow it to open up a bit more. This sounds really great and for $10/bottle – sounds even better!
