Brew Review: Lagunitas New Dog Town Pale Ale

by Kelli H. on August 28, 2012

Name: Lagunitas New Dog Town Pale Ale
Date: 8-23-12
Location: Petaluma, CA
Type: Pale Ale
Price: $7.99/6-pack
Alcohol: 6.2%
IBU’s: 47

Aroma: Citrus, Skunk hops.

Body & Texture: Bitter upfront, light-medium bodied, starts with nice carbonation followed by medium bitterness, and eases off with a sweet clean finish.

Aftertaste: Citrus sweet and dry.

You know Ryder had to try some New Dog Town.
Overall Impression:
I am 100% on board with this pale ale. I first tried it at a friends wedding last month on tap. I could have sworn it was an IPA, but was told it was Lagunitas Pale Ale. I’d never tried New Dog Town before, so David went out shortly after and picked up a six pack. This is a pretty serious Pale Ale. I’m not even sure how it’s not an IPA. It’s funny, because Lagunitas regular IPA only has 45.6 IBU’s, and this pale ale has more. Its got a super bitter up front taste, but in the end its almost like a dry wine, since there isn’t much of an aftertaste. There definitely isn’t an lingering hop flavor. I’d say this is a pale ale for IPA lovers. It’s got a serious edge over Kona’s Fire Rock and 21st Amendment’s Bitter American. We’ll definitely be buying it again and again. The price is just right too! Totally an affordable, delicious, craft beer.

I’m so glad I’m not hte only one with a yellow lab that likes beer. He’s his mama’s boy! Both of them are, clearly.
Must try!! I love a good pale ale.

The mason jars are so cheap at the brewery, I think $3. You should see if you can order online. πŸ™‚

I love amber ales but I almost never drink beer anymore. I’m pretty much a wine gal!

I just tried a pretty hoppy pale wheat ale (Miami Weiss – clever name!) that I thought was an IPA at first too. I really liked it and I think I’d love this one too considering I’ve liked everything else I’ve tried from Lagunitas. Of course it’s not available here in Canada but I’ll have to keep an eye out on our next beer run to the States πŸ™‚

i love those mason jareque pin glasses. I haven’t heard of this one but lover their brew. We’re out of beer so I may need to run to the local BevoMo. mmmm pale ale.

I just bought this on your recommendation (ok, it was on sale too!) and it is delicious! I love their traditional IPA and adore A Lil’ Sumpin Sumpin (even if it is never on sale and always expensive, but so worth it). I LOVED this pale ale. I great departure from the traditional and definitely not an expected pale ale. Thanks for the suggestion!!

They sell it at my local grocery store but the same thing tends to happen here, too! Always sells out quick.
