Brew Review: Green Flash Hop Head Red

by Kelli H. on June 12, 2012

Name: Green Flash Brewing Hop Head Red
Date: 6-9-12 (birthday beer!)
Location: San Diego, CA
Type: Red IPA
Price: Gift — unknown
Alcohol: 7%
IBU’s: 70

Aroma: Yeast, malt, light hops. Reminds me of a day brewing. Dry hopped with Amarillo hops.

Appearance: Thick creamy head, hazy, not clear, brownish red.

Body & Texture: Smooth, velvety, good carbonation. Full bodied — complex. Great burps full of flavor.

Aftertaste: Bitter with very slight malt.

Overall Impression:
This brew had the creamiest head I’ve ever experienced. This head was thick! It also left the best lacing on the glass that I have ever seen. It was a curtain of lacing all the way down the glass by the time we finished it. There were lots of yeast aroma and flavor in the head, which reminded me of home brewing with David. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even on a sunny day. It’s not too heavy and the 22 oz shared between 2 people was perfect. After the beer had warmed a little you could start to taste the alcohol more. Although Red IPA’s don’t tend to be my favorite beers, I did enjoy this one more than Lagunitas Imperial Red, David disagrees with me on this. If you’re a fan of Red IPA’s then you should definitely pick one of these up and give it a try.

Typical Ryder, our brew dog.

I love Green Flash, but don’t recall having this one. That is a a lot of head, and I like the shot of the pour with the bubbles. Love me my IPAs. Seems fitting that you are drinking it on the beach 🙂 And Ryder is just too cute.

I really enjoyed this beer! Perfect beer on a perfect day! 🙂 That head was just outstanding! I do like Lagunitas’ Imperial Red a tad better just because I think it’s a bit more smooth and drinkable, but that’s not to say this beer isn’t great. I love me some Red IPA!
