Brew Review: Arrogant Bastard Ale

by Kelli H. on May 15, 2012

Name: Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale
Date: 5-6-12
Location: Escondido, CA
Type: American Strong Ale
Availability: Year round
Price: $4.49/22 oz
Alcohol: 7.2%
IBU’s: Classified…? 100+

Aroma: Malts with tiny slight hops and pine

Appearance: Beautiful dark color, a ruby brown. Off white head, dissipates quickly.

Body & Texture: Good amount of carbonation. Full bodied. Lots of malts and hops balanced nicely.

Aftertaste: Alcohol bite in the aftertaste is apparent. Completely hop aftertaste with no malt. Smooth!

Overall Impression:
I was a little worried I wouldn’t like this beer since it seems to try to ward you off. David swears I had this before, but I don’t remember ever trying it. I was actually surprised by this beer. It is definitely a beer for craft brew lovers, and it doesn’t try to appeal to anyone. It even asks you not to call and make any complaints, because they don’t care if you like it or not. I kind of love that! I thought it was pretty balanced between the malts and hops. It was very malty upfront and then the after taste was just hops! For $4.49, I thought it was completely worth the price. Honestly, how can you not feel totally cool drinking a beer called ‘Arrogant Bastard’? I know I felt pretty bad-ass! If you’re a craft brew lover and you haven’t given it a try, I recommend it. If you’re just starting to dip your toes into the craft beer scene, you might want to wait a while longer, this beer might not be for you. I’d definitely buy it again!

I don’t know what I love more, the bottle or the beer. Both are fantastic!

If you ever head down to the San Diego area, you HAVE to go to the brewery! It’s freaking beautiful and all their beers on tap is a sight to see. Love stone brew.
