Brew Review: Green Flash Barleywine Style Ale

by Kelli H. on April 3, 2012

Beer: Green Flash Brewing Co. Barleywine Style Ale Vintage 2012
Date: 3-23-12
Location: San Diego, CA
Price: $4.99/ 22 oz
Alcohol: 10.9%
IBU’s: 85

Aroma: Light malts and caramel.

Appearance: Deep red

Body & Texture: Tingles your tongue. You can taste the alcohol but it’s semi masked by sweetness.

Aftertaste: Clean — almost no aftertaste at all.

Overall Impression:
Since I don’t have much experience with barleywines I’m just going to give this a go. I’ve only ever had one other Barleywine which was Widmer’s.  Without food I found it to be much more enjoyable. With food the alcohol was more prevalent, and I didn’t enjoy it as much. Upon first sip, I felt like “WOW! it’s kind of zippy!”. It seemed like it bubbled on my tongue like 7-Up. Then the tingles went away after swallowing. I wasn’t a huge fan of the alcohol upfront but it was still definitely drinkable. The 10.9% hit me pretty hard! After the beer had warmed a little more, I could taste the malts MUCH more. It made a huge difference, also the alcohol taste was less. Compared to Widmer’s (from what I remember), I think I may have enjoyed this one more. I’ll definitely need to continue tasting more barleywines, and this one made me excited to try more.

I doubt I can find this at my store – and that makes me sad!! I like anything reddish and with caramel tones.

Brooklyn Monster Ale and Dieu du Ciel Solstice d’Hiver are the only two barleywines I’ve tried .. The latter was too strong for me but the Monster Ale is pretty good and I thought it goes down pretty smoothly (almost too smoothly because I forget how strong it is!)

I don’t have much experience with barleywines either, but I’m surprised to hear this one doesn’t have much aftertaste. Interesting!

Love GreenFlash, though I don’t recall having their barelywine before. Must check it out.
