Brew Review: Bear Republic Racer X

by Kelli H. on March 27, 2012

Beer: Bear Republic Racer X
Date: 3-2-12
Type: Double IPA
Availability: Seasonal – Limited Release
Location: Cloverdale, California (local!)
Price: $6.99 for 22 oz
Alcohol: 8.3%
IBU’s: 100+

Aroma: Hops. Smells like hop buds when you’re home brewing. An amazingly hoppy aroma. Love the smell.

Appearance: Copper and clear.

Body & Texture: Great carbonation. Great thick, foamy, white head. Medium bodied. Can taste the alcohol as it goes down.

Aftertaste: STRAIGHT UP HOPS!

Overall Impression:
As David said, this is like a hop sledge hammer hitting you, and I’d agree! I really loved the aroma, appearance, and carbonation. The creamy white head was really beautiful. Unfortunately, it was too much hops for me! I’m usually a total hop head and enjoy other hoppy beers at over 100 IBU’s (like their Apex), but this just didn’t seem balanced to me. David loved this beer. If you’re an extreme hop head, definitely give this one a try! If you’re not, well, this is probably not the best IPA for you to try.

Omg I would probably not like this beer although I would trick myself into ordering it because it’s so pretty… Then I’d have to bum it off on Max because he loves drinking all the hoppy beer I order thinking I’ll like it when I never actually do…

I know Ben wouldn’t be a big fan but I think I would! I like hoppy – but if it’s toooo much, then sure might make me think twice. But hey – one time, any beer is worth a try πŸ™‚

Though you know I love hops, I think the alcohol content (and flavor) would put me off a bit on this one. I love IPAs, but I usually prefer ones in the 5-7% range.

(PS – Nice job with the natural light!)
