Brew Review: Pliny the Younger

by Kelli H. on February 14, 2012

Last Tuesday David and I headed out to downtown Santa Rosa. We were ready to face the crowd and try our hand at the wildly popular, Pliny the Younger. Did I ever think in my lifetime I would wait in line for beer? No. I’ve waited in a line for a brew festival, knowing on the other end I would be tasting unlimited beers from all over the country. But wait in line for one small 10 oz pour of one beer? Absolutely not! Then again, what kind of beer aficionados would we be if we didn’t try one of the most famous beers from our own hometown? How would we forgive ourselves for missing out again on PLINY THE YOUNGER?! Well, we couldn’t, and that’s why we went down there. Did it feel weird standing outside in the cold with the possibility of being rained on, for beer? No doubt about it. I felt like I was waiting in line for beer during prohibition.

After waiting outside for 30 minutes to get a wrist band, and then being put on another list to be seated (with no estimate of when we’d be seated), we went up to the bar, and lucked out when two girls got up, we snagged their bar stools. We ordered two Pliny the Youngers, took our first sips with a little apprehension. I mean, come on, a beer with this much hype?! It can’t really be that good. You know when people freak out over how great a movie is, and then you see it, and it’s really not that good? That’s what I was expecting. I was wrong though. This beer is one of the best beers I’ve ever had. It’s a triple IPA, but doesn’t even seem like a what you’d expect from a triple IPA. It tastes like a double, but really I thought it was one of the smoothest beers’ I’ve ever had.

Would I wait in the line again for Pliny the Younger?
I would! But…I think I’ll wait till next year. I really hate lines. David is planning on going back very soon.
The high alcohol definitely gets to you. After my 10 oz pour I was buzzed, but not drunk.
If you’re in the area and a huge beer geek, I recommend going. You won’t be disappointed like you are when people hype up movies.

By the way, Russian River has my favorite pizza!
Do you think it’s crazy to wait in line for beer?

Super fun night! Pliny the Younger is without a doubt one of the best beers I’ve ever had. I really want to get back there for some more before it’s gone for the year!

It’s funny that this was the first thing I saw when I clicked to check out your blog after you left me a comment … I live in Canada so Russian River beer is not available here but my boyfriend’s a huge beer geek and all he ever talks about is Russian River! He wants to go to California just to try their beers one day haha. I’ll have to show him this post, he will die of jealousy!

It is definitely not crazy to wait in line for the Younger! Living in downtown Santa Rosa, I can’t tell you how many times I did a “walk-by” or “drive-by” to check on the RRBC line status! The only times without a line (that I discovered) were Super Bowl Sunday and Valentines Day, but I had to sit outside on the patio. Last night my boyfriend and his friend grabbed a coveted seat at the bar at 7pm, but they were out of Younger for the day. 🙁 I think today may be the last day.

I think it’s a Sonoma County thing! We do some pretty crazy things around here for great beer and wine! Oh, and food. 🙂 RRBC pizza (and beer bites) are awesome.

It’s funny your boyfriend was there last night. I was too! But from about 4:30-6:30. We didn’t have a line, walked right in, but around 5:15ish a line started to form. I’m just happy they didn’t run out while I was there! 🙂
