Brew Review: New Belgium Belgo
Beer: New Belgium Belgo Belgian Style IPA
Date: 10-30-11
Alcohol: 7%
Package Type: 6 pack of 12 oz bottles
Location Brewed: Fort Collins, Colorado
Price: Unknown - taken from my parents well-stocked beer fridge.
Aroma: Medium hops
Appearance: Very light golden
Body & Texture: Light, smooth, good carbonation. Easily drinkable.
Aftertaste: Slight bite and citrus flavors
Overall Impression: This would be a good beer for a beginner IPA drinker. It seems much lighter on the hops than a West Coast IPA. The color was very light which I don't really like, it just seemed off. It was very clear. It's more of a light IPA so if you're just getting your toes wet in IPA's then you should really try this one. Great beer for lunch with a sandwich on a sunny day but not necessarily a hot day. David and I agreed that we wouldn't buy this beer for our fridge to keep on hand but if someone else had it then we would definitely drink it. It gave me a great burp which I always appreciate in a beer. Sorry if that grossed you out but I love a great beer burp! It also left great lacing on the glass which is always a good sign.

The beer burp bit made me laugh :)
ReplyDelete@ErrignGlad it didn't gross you out!
ReplyDeleteMMm... I love Brew Review days! The Belgo IPA was unique in that it was so light and still called itself an IPA. It was a good beer, but I like mine a bit darker and more hoppy.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Beer burps are absolutely one of the top reasons to drink beer. :)
I'm super curious about this beer, since you've described it as being so light. Generally, I'm a hefeweizen kind of girl, but I've always wanted to get into drinking more IPAs, since they're so common in NorCal (and I don't like the idea of drinking only girly beer). Maybe a lighter IPA will be my gateway beer...;)

ReplyDeleteThis would be a great beer for you to try then! Plus, drinking a Belgian IPA just sounds hard core. :) Definitely not girly sounding at all!
I love IPAs. I have found this beer to be a little light for an IPA, though it is enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteAnd beer burps are my specialty. :D
I'd like it since I like citrus, but as a hop-head, I doubt it would be my favorite. Thanks for the review!
